Shift-S3ctor would like to thank all of the sponsors, drivers and participants for making Airstrip Attack a tremendously fun, safe and successful event. We would also like to thank the City of Coalinga for being gracious hosts. Since the inception of Airstrip Attack at Trona, this series has taken on a life of its own. With your feedback, we have continued to make improvements to the event and look forward to continuing to make Airstrip Attack a can’t miss event for automotive and racing enthusiasts on the west coast.
Saturday started with a line of amazing race cars at the entrance gate, like caged animals, revving their engines. The cars poured in, daily driver sports cars, exotic garage queens, trailered race cars, purpose built Airstrip Attack vehicles… all here for one purpose: legal street racing. The scene is completed with the many sponsor tents, music and of course the street sweeper cleaning off our dedicated race surface, a 1 mile stretch of runway. The atmosphere this weekend was incredible. A combination of car show and race event with the music occasionally interrupted by the sounds of cars at full throttle stretching their legs across the finish cone. Mid-morning, the Babaloo Cuban food truck rolled in and immediately got their grill fired up. We like the smell of grilled pork and race gas! For this event, Shift-S3ctor introduced trap speed timing and it was a big hit. Our timing desk was overwhelmed by the drivers as everyone was striving to beat their personal best. By mid-day, we saw 3 cars inching closer to the holy grail, 200 miles per hour! The fastest trap we saw this day came from Sean Cagle in his “paratrooper” Camaro. This car clocked 198.9 miles per hour while the BBi 911 Turbo (196.7 mph), and the English Racing Nissan GTR (196.7mph) were very close behind. We finished off day one with our Trophy Races. These races are side by side races with the winner crossing the finish line first.
